What is it?

Trauma refers to extreme stress that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope.  

the experience of an event or enduring condition in which a person’s ability to integrate their emotional experience is overwhelmed or they subjectively experience a threat to their life, body integrity, or their sanity.   

Trauma can include the response to a one-time incident like an accident, natural disaster, crime, surgery, deaths and other violent events.

 

 It also includes responses to chronic or repetitive experiences such as child abuse, neglect, combat, urban violence, concentration camps, enduring deprivation, domestic violence and battering relationships.

Psychological trauma is . . . 

Recovery is the primary goal for people who have

experienced trauma.

Recovery does not necessarily mean complete freedom from post-traumatic affects.  

 

Recovery is an individual experience and will be and look different for everyone.

 

In general recovery is the ability to live in the present without being overwhelmed by the thoughts and feelings

of the past.
